spanish armies AT vitoria (june 21, 1813)
Vitoria was the last major battle fought on Spanish soil
during the Peninsular War (June 21, 1813). In that battlefield there was
Spanish units fighting in the both sides:
King Joseph's Spanish Army
Royal Guard Infantry (Grenadiers, Voltigeurs and
Fusiliers)
Royal Guard Cavalry (Hussars and Lanciers)
Line Infantry
Light Infantry
Light Cavalry (Chasseurs a Cheval)
Spanish Loyal Army
Line Infantry
Light Infantry
The uniforms of both Spanish armies, especially the corresponding to the
King Joseph's Army, is a living research area. I am very grateful to
Luis Sorando and Tom de Voe from the
Napoleon Series Forum, for helping me during my (superficial)
research about these subjects.
For King Joseph's Army the references become mainly from the last works
of Luis Sorando, published in the French magazine 'Soldats
Napoleoniens':
Les sources classiques sur l’armée de Joseph Napoléon Roi
d’Espagne : une analyse critique
L’Infanterie de ligne de l’armée espagnole de José
I. Premiere et Deuxieme parties'
La cavalerie de ligne espagnole de José Ier – (1)
Les Chasseurs à Cheval
La Garde Royale du Roi Joseph. 1ère partie.
L’Infanterie
La Cavalerie de la Garde Royal du Roi Joseph
as well as several messages exchanged in the
Napoleon Series Forum
I have also used (for both Spanish Armies) the books
Spanish Army of the Napoleonic Wars (3) 1812-1815'.
Men-at-Arms Series No. 334. Osprey Publishing. 1999)
Uniformes Españoles de la Guerra de la Independencia. J. M.
Bueno. Aldaba Ediciones. 1989
The French Army Royal, Republican, Imperial 1792-1815. Volume
5 Régiments Hors de Ligne (Foreign Unifroms). G. F. Nafziger
For the flags I have used the reference for the web site of
Luis Camero
The references I have finally used are summarized in the following
table.
The research is not closed still. It was an agitated era!
